Under the obedience to his Josephite Superior General, and inspired by the Holy Spirit, the Rev. James Albert, S.S.J. began All Saints Church in 1919. The actual edifice was dedicated and consecrated in the summer of 1920, but the local church, which was the faithful people of God, were already working in His vineyard. All Saints Church was begun in 1919 for the purpose of evangelization in the African American community on the Westbank of New Orleans. This fundamental mission of proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ in and with the African American community has not changed in these years. All Saints Church remains committed to this apostolic work.

True evangelization requires sound religious instruction and it was to this purpose that All Saints School was established five years later. The dedication of the laity and the Holy Family Sisters is immeasurable as hundreds of children received a solid catholic education. With deep gratitude, we thank Almighty God for blessing us with such good teachers.

Through these years, All Saints Church has remained committed to the sanctification of its people through worship, religious instruction and participation in the sacramental life of the Church. What a joy to see numerous Baptisms, First Communions, Confirmations, Weddings, Anointings and Funerals that have been celebrated in this sacred edifice. And yet, All Saints Church and School have also been firmly committed to social justice and racial harmony. Asserting the dignity of the human person has not come easy over the past years but the Lord has richly blessed us.

As we continue to serve God and the community with joy and hope, we pray that Mary, Queen of All Saints, will intercede for us on behalf of Her Divine Son. May All Saints Church continue to heed the words of Holy Mother Church- “Enlivened and united in His Spirit, we journey toward the consummation of human history, one which fully accords with the counsel of God’s Love. “To reestablish all things in Christ, both those in the heavens and those on earth” (Eph. 1:10)(Gaudium et Spes).
